Lawyers from Weil and Sheppard Mullin complete the LegalQuants Residency
45 lawyers from law firms and in-house teams have now completed the four-week programme, in which each lawyer builds a working AI tool with a mentor who builds in their own practice.
Lawyers from Weil and Sheppard Mullin are among the 45 lawyers who have completed the LegalQuants Residency across its first three cohorts. Weil funded three of its lawyers to take part. Lawyers from Latham, Willkie Farr, A&O Shearman and Dorsey & Whitney have also attended. Some firms sponsor places, and many lawyers pay for themselves.
The Residency runs for four weeks. The first week is preparation, and the next three are mentored building. Each resident is paired one-to-one with a mentor who builds tools in their own practice. Residents have three one-hour sessions a week and two webinars a week with outside speakers, and leave with a working tool.
The Lawyer reported on the two firms' participation on 8 October. Andrew Simon, Weil's Chief AI & Innovation Officer, described the Residency as part of the firm's decentralised approach to innovation, alongside LASER, Weil's own AI development team.
“The LegalQuants Residency is part of that model: help some of our most AI-forward team members better learn the ‘art of the possible’, which ultimately makes LASER’s job easier and gets us to client impact faster.”
“I think the program itself really opened my eyes to a different way of thinking about solving legal problems, helping clients in creative ways and understanding really what’s possible now in this new paradigm.”
“The lawyers firms send us already think like builders. Four weeks later they go back with a working tool and the confidence to build the next one on their own.”
